These range from high-quality venues for professional championships to the more tranquil relaxation of local resident and touring visitor. Dumfries and Galloway Region has 34 golf courses of varying kinds. All the courses have different settings; some are links courses, others on hill slopes inland, with a variety of challenges.

The host for this list is Craigadam Estate near Crocketford, centrally located within the Region and within fifty miles of the great courses at Troon, Ayr and Turnberry. Further details of the excellent accommodation and facilities at Craigadam are given elsewhere on this site.

Clubhouse : Next to Leisure Club Bar and Bistro. All-year, facilities include 16.5 metre indoor pool, jacuzzi, fitness suite and games room. Part of Brighouse Bay Holiday (caravan) Park. 01557-870267 (Accommodation).
Other comments : All-weather course, views excellent, 4th hole 195 yard par 3 a considerable challenge. Water hazard at 8th, tricky 9th. Wind and gullies.

Clubhouse : The Cally Palace Hotel is a Deluxe hotel with four-star AA and RAC status. Tennis court, sauna, swimming pool and jacuzzi are available.

Yardage : 18-hole - 4720 yards - SSS-66. Rolling parkland. Weekday round £ 22.
Clubhouse : Very modern clubhouse with changing and shower facilities for ladies and gents. Spacious lounge, dining and bar areas. Catering during the season March-October. Handicap certificates not required, but booking at the bar or by phone is essential.
Other Comments : Fairly busy. Views across Solway excellent. Near Barend Holiday Village.


Dumfries and County Golf Club :

Yardage : 18-hole - 5298 yards - SSS-68. Fairly level parkland.
Clubhouse : Modern, overlooking 18th green. Changing and shower facilities for ladies and gents. Excellent catering and bar facilities. Book through the Professional/Secretary. Well-stocked professional shop.
Other Comments : River Nith to N. and W. 5th green ('Spion Kop') overlooks river. Drive and elevated second shot to green must avoid water. 14th hole short, but surrounded by mature trees and bunkers.


Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club : [G2G]

Clubhouse : Modern, changing and shower facilities for ladies and gents. Bar and catering all days except Monday. Well-stocked professional shop. Booking by phone with Professional essential as course is busy throughout season.
Other Comments : Long 5th and 13th very challenging. Short 12th has out of bounds to right, demanding straight, well-hit tee shot.
N.B.: £ 5.00 supplement for playing using Gateway to Golf pass.


Kirkcudbright Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 18-hole - 5717 yards - SSS-69 (men) SSS-72 (ladies). Sloping parkland.
Clubhouse : Extensive clubhouse with changing, shower and toilet facilities for ladies and gents. Lounge, bar and dining area, catering normally every day in the season. Booking by phone to arrange tee time is advised. Handicap certificates required. Trolleys for hire.
Other Comments : Long 8th and short 9th holes offer good play. 9th 178 yards from visitors' tees, requires a very accurate tee shot to a small green with a burn and a pond to its left. Fine views of the Dee estuary.

Other Comments : New course on former agricultural land near Portpatrick. Very good long par-5 holes - 7th at 502 yards, 10th at 608 yards). Excellent test for golfers.

Lochmaben Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 18-hole - 5357 yards - SSS-66. Parkland.
Clubhouse : Roomy clubhouse with changing facilities. First floor lounge and bar with views over Kirk Loch and the course. Catering facilities throughout season. Weekday access normally possible, but check with clubhouse whether competitions are on. Visitor playing time unrestricted before 5:00 p.m. weekdays.
Other Comments : Historic location, - second tee to site of Bruce Castle (castle mound). Third hole beside deep defensive ditch. A second deep defensive ditch is seen round the bailey area. Short 8th across corner of loch needs 8 or 9 iron to green to avoid slicing into water. The 16th also runs beside the loch.


Lockerbie Golf Club : [G2G]

Clubhouse : Modern, with ladies and gents changing and shower facilities. Bar and catering facilities every day April-October. Advance tee booking not normally needed during week, but a call is advised. No Handicap Certificates are required. No restrictions during weekdays on visitors' play. Golf buggies for hire.
Other Comments : Extended 1988 from 9-hole course. Interesting 8th par-3 128 yard hole, - tee shot made over water to small green. 16th par-3 169 yard hole also excellent.


Moffat Golf Club : [G2G]

Clubhouse : Modern/recent renovation. Ladies and gents changing and shower facilities. Lounge overlooks town and hills. Catering and bar all week, - special rates for parties. Snooker room available. No visitors Wednesdays (members' competitions), otherwise weekdays are available. Check with club to ensure tee times are available. No handicap certificate required.
Other Comments : Course designed by Ben Sayers and established 1884. Testing holes - 9th hole par-3 - goes from the tee to a 'towering' rocky outcrop and a green. 11th hole also needs a long and accurate drive to achieve par.


Newton Stewart Golf Club : [G2G]

Clubhouse : Ladies and gents changing and toilet facilities. Catering March to October. Weekdays normally have free time, but always check tee time availability with Secretary. Parties must book beforehand. Handicap certificates not required. Trolleys may be hired.
Other Comments : 2 x par-5, 5 x par-3, 11 x par-4. Tee shot from 9th has 3 choices, - green approach over whins and a burn. The following short hole, - 'The Gusher' - is from an elevated tee over a burn in a ravine to a large green.


The Pines Golf Centre, Dumfries : [G2G]

Yardage : 18-hole - 5864 yards - Par-69 (SSS-69 Provisional). Woodland, heathland, undulating grazing land. Water features.
Driving Range : 20-bay floodlit driving range - top quality mats and tournament balls. Tuition in purpose-built teaching bay with latest equipment. PGA qualified professional provides expert advice. Outside short shot practice area (links and parkland bunkers) with special features. Putting on 18-hole contoured putting-green to course standards.
Clubhouse : Log cabin style clubhouse in woodland setting. Ladies and gents changing and shower facilities. Catering in lounge. Golf shop offers golf equipment and accessories, including custom fitting of clubs. Pay and play.
Other Comments : New course with interesting dog-legs and green positions. Wildlife encouraged by 12,000-tree planting and conservation management.


Portpatrick (Dunskey) Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : The Dinvin Course : 9 holes - 3008 yards - par 54. Parkland/heath.
               The Dunskey Course : 18 holes - 5882 yards - SSS 68. Links/coastal cliff.
Clubhouse : Fairly modern building with shower, changing and toilet facilities. Well-stocked bar, dining area and very pleasant lounge. Catering normally available throughout the season. Booking normally essential, in particular for the Dunskey Course for which handicap certificates are required. Dunskey Course tee is reserved for members weekdays 9:00 - 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., weekends 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Other Comments : Golf World calls Dunskey "The best holiday course in the South of Scotland". The two courses present challenges to all capabilities of golfer. Views are remarkable, - Irish Coast, Isle of Man and the Mull of Kintyre.

Powfoot Golf Club : [G2G]

Solway Links Golf Course : [G2G]

Yardage : 11-hole - 3062 yards - par-41 for 11 holes. Links type. Upgrading towards 18 holes 1999-2000. Sea winds.
Clubhouse : Converted farm cottage. Basic facilities. No dress restrictions. Other comments : Fine views of the hills and sea. 'Pay and play' site. Clubs etc. for hire. Very well drained, - very rarely closes.


Southerness Golf Club : [G2G]

Address : Southerness DG2 8AZ. (16 miles south of Dumfries off A710 near Southerness Village.)
Yardage : 18 hole - 6566 yards - SSS-72. Championship Links Course.
Clubhouse : Modern, roomy, comfortable, ladies and gents changing, toilet and shower facilities. Lounge, dining room and bar. Excellent views of the Solway Coast, sometimes the Isle of Man. Site shop sells golf equipment and 'Southerness' souvenirs. Booking essential, - time sheet operation in summer months so contact the Starter to have tee times allocated. Handicap certificates are required.
Other Comments : Designed by MacKenzie Ross in 1947. Championships held here by the R & A, the Scottish Golf Union, Scottish Ladies Golf Association and the Ladies' Golf Union. Course in superb condition, greens a joy. Not for the beginner, - sea winds, gorse and heather.

Stranraer Golf Club : [G2G] [Di]

Other Comments : Course designed by James Braid. 14 x par-4, 3 par-3 and 1 par-5 hole. North Rhinns peninsula site of great beauty, - views of Arran and Ailsa Craig. Burn crosses the course.


Thornhill Golf Club : [G2G]

Clubhouse : Modern, changing and shower facilities for ladies and gents. Bar, dining room and lounge. Catering throughout the season. Weekday availability good, but check tee times with Club Steward.
Other Comments : Challenge to scratch golfers. Scenery excellent at 6th hole par-4 421 yard. Demanding 4th hole par-4 426 yard dog leg has a wishing well and out of bounds to its right. Railway beside 15th, - care with a slice, or the ball might travel to Glasgow.


Wigtownshire County Golf Club : [G2G] [Di]

Yardage : 18-hole - 5847 yards - SSS-68. Genuine links course.
N.B. : Major uprating in early 2005 to 6000+ yards and higher SSS rating.
Clubhouse : Changing and shower facilities for ladies and gents. Bar and catering throughout the year. Disabled toilet available.
Other Comments : Popular course throughout week, phone to check availability, particularly for parties. Trolleys for hire. Currently course is 14 x par-4, 3 par-3, 1 par-5 holes. Sea-breezes and subtle slopes. 4th hole par-4 301 yards has out of bounds to the right. 12th hole par-4 392 yards (stroke index 1) known as 'Cunningham's Best' is a rigorous test.
