The smaller local courses with variety and a friendly welcome, to be recommended to players of all ages and abilities. Dumfries and Galloway Region has 34 golf courses of varying kinds. All the courses have different settings; some are links courses, others on hill slopes inland, with a variety of challenges.

The host for this list is Craigadam Estate near Crocketford, centrally located within the Region and within fifty miles of the great courses at Troon, Ayr and Turnberry. Further details of the excellent accommodation and facilities at Craigadam are given elsewhere on this site.

Note on terminology : 'SSS' is Standard Scratch figure for 18 holes or equivalent; courses' severity is otherwise given as a 'Par' number.

Clubhouse : Modern clubhouse, catering and bar April to September. Car Park.
Other Comments : Access generally available. No visitors after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Intermediate level course, suiting players of all abilities. Centenary Year in 2005.

Craigieknowes Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 2782 yards - Par-54. Parkland on hill slopes.
Clubhouse : Tickets and club hire from the Clubhouse which has a Tea Room. A pay and play course without booking or dress restrictions.
Other Comments : Most holes par 3 and fairly short but challenging. Select clubs carefully. Beginners and moderately experienced golfers may like this course. Parking area.

Comments : Weekdays, pay and play, telephone to check availability then and at weekends advised.

Dalbeattie Golf Club : [G2G]

Weekday round £ 10 (18 holes) £ 5 (9 holes), £ 50 (7-day weekly ticket).
Address : off Maxwell Park, Dalbeattie. (Signposted from A794 Haugh of Urr Road.) Secretary : 60 Maxwell Park, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire DG5 4LS.
Yardage : 9-hole - 2855 yards, 18-hole - 5710 yards - SSS-68 (men) SSS-70 (ladies). Parkland/hill land. [Hole yardage being increased] Currently 7 x Par 3 and 2 x Par 3 from visitors' tees.
Clubhouse : Ladies and gents toilets, washing and changing facilities. Bar and catering facilities during April-October season. Practice area, putting green, buggy hire (£5 for 9 holes, £10 for 18 holes).
Other Comments : Good course for sharpening a short game. Par 4 6^th hole good, par 4 363-yard 4^th hole demands very accurate tee shot to a small green. Wednesday is Ladies' Day, Thursday is Gentlemens' Day, - visitors must keep clear of match players. No visitors after 5:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Phone to check availability.

Gatehouse of Fleet Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 5042 yards - SSS-66. Parkland on hill slope. Drains well - no winter greens needed.
Clubhouse : Basic, changing facilities for ladies and gents. Contact the administrator to book onto the course.
Other Comments : Going since 1921. Remarkable views down one of the finest valleys in southern Scotland and inland towards Cairnsmore of Fleet. 9^th hole par 3 has a difficult shot 162 yards from the tee down to a small green.

Gretna Golf Club and Driving Range :

Yardage : 9-hole - 6430 yards - SSS-72 Parkland. Also Driving Range.
Clubhouse : Recent build, with changing rooms for men and women. Catering and bar all year.
Comments : Equipment for hire. Par-5 4^th hole challenging. Advance tee booking best during weekends. 6-bay Golf Driving Range (all covered).

No Clubhouse or dress restrictions. Pay and Play Golf, fees paid at Warden's Office.
Comments : A good beginner's course in a relaxing setting.

Yardage : 9-hole - 3090 yards - SSS-70. Parkland/heathland.
Comments : Three completely new holes added recently - Par-4 8^th, Par-3 9^th and Par-4 short 7^th, which needs a a pitching wedge across a wide ditch to an island green. Course founded 1892 by Thomas Moses.

St. Medan Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 4454 yards - SSS-63. Coastal dunes (links) course.
Clubhouse : Basic, ladies and gents changing facilities. Catering April - September. Generally no need to book during the week.
Other Comments : Par 4 235 yard 4th hole has elevated tee shot seawards. Par 3 8^th hole also good.

New Galloway Golf Club : [G2G]

Yardage : 9-hole - 2270 yards, 18-hole - 2270 - SSS-64. Hill land.
Clubhouse : Basic, ladies and gents changing facilities. Bar between 12 noon and 2:00 p.m. during summer. Meals at local pubs and hotels. Pay and play in weekdays. Ring Secretary for any other information.
Other Comments : First and second fairways lead to a rather fine view. 6^th hole par-4 256 yard is very good. Course excellent for wildlife, - Buzzards overhead, wild flowers spring to autumn.

Comments : Some very challenging par 4 holes, but a good course for golfers of moderate ability. Good pay and play flexibility.

Other Comments : 3^rd hole par-3 195 yards from the tee. Uphill shot, out of bounds to left, sloping down to the right. Views of Wigtown Bay and the distant Lake District hills from 4^th tee.
